I spend far too much time surfing the net in search of photography information. The following annotated list is a compilation of my favorite sites. If you find a dead link or you want to recommend a site, please contact me at david@redbeardphoto.com.

Galleries: These are sites that display fine-art photography.

  • Cambridge in Colour: Beautiful images of the Cambridge University campus at night, along with tutorials on low-light photography.

  • Eclectic Image: Fine Art Photography: These professional photographers have some nice images and useful information about how to make polaroid image transfers and other artistic effects.

  • photo.net: Phillip Greenspun's monster site is a great source for galleries, reviews and forums.

  • PhotoAlley.com: Has some good professional galleries and photography tips.

Reviews: These are good sites to visit if you are looking for reviews of photography hardware or software.

  • A Large Format Photography Homepage: Q.-Tuan Luong's compendium of information and reviews. Includes some excellent historical information and reviews and comparisons of older equipment and lenses.

  • Photography Review.com: readers post reviews of photography equipment. A must-read if you are thinking of buying the latest equipment.

  • Christopher's Odds and Sods: A personal web site containing detailed lens tests and reviews of large and medium format lenses.

  • Digital Photography Review (DPReview.com): A great site for reviews and information about the lasted digital cameras and scanners.

  • Imaging Resource: Another great site for reviews of digital stuff. These guys seem to do nothing all day but tinker with digital toys!
  • dcviews: This site is a clearinghouse for links to the latest articles and information about digital cameras and digital photography.

Education: These sites have useful information, guides, or tips.

  • Picture This: Carol Leigh's site at CalPhoto.com contains lots of tips for nature photography and message boards reporting on wildflowers and fall foliage.

  • Graflex.Org: This is the ultimate site for anyone who is using or is interested in the old Graflex cameras. The site contains information about the history of the company and the cameras and accessories. There is also a useful list of stores and dealers who sell used photo equipment.

  • The Luminous Landscape: Michael Reichman's website provide useful tips on landscape photography and detailed product reviews.

  • The Digital Darkroom: Ian Lyons website provides detailed product reviews, Photoshop tips, and useful links.

  • Photorama: This is a link to their "Links" page. There are so many links on it that I could not begin to copy them all.

  • Steve Hoffman's Nature and Scenic Photography: Steve's website offers tips as well as his own images and reviews.

Manufacturers

  • Gitzo: This is another sources for information about these ridiculously overpriced tripods. Remember, carbon fibre is just a fancy name for plastic!

  • Kodak: The official Kodak site. It doesn't look like they have much interest in selling film anymore. Even Kodak has gone digital!

  • Olympus: The official Olympus site. They use a flash introduction so try not to be startled.

  • Lowepro: They make the best camera bags and backpacks. The website is full of pictures and information about their products. The only problem is that their product lines tend to be redundant, so it is difficult to choose.

  • Nikon: They don't provide as much information as I would like to see on their website, but you can sometimes download the specifications for their products in pdf format.

Stores: These are on-line stores that I recommend.

  • B&H Photo: O.K., so these guys close early on Fridays and they are not open on Saturdays or Jewish holidays and they are curt on the phone, but they stock every piece of photographic equipment available. You name it, they've got it. The prices are good and the service is very reliable.

  • Calumet: Their prices are unreasonable, so if you can find what they are selling anyplace else, you will get a better deal. However, their catalog provides detailed information about the products, and their proprietary products are very good.
